THE BOOK AS ART AND JOYCE SCOTT’S EPIC PRINTS AT PYRAMID ATLANTIC

SILVER SPRING, MD - Pyramid Atlantic investigates the role of books as objects that inspire beauty and awe in an innovative regional exhibition: BookEnds: The Book as Art. This exhibition is split between two venues, Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA and Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring, MD. The juror for this exhibition is Helen Frederick, Founder and Director Emeritus of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. Ms. Frederick chose 56 pieces that will be split up and on display at both galleries. The work encompasses more traditional forms of art books and more contemporary and sculptural versions as well.

The second exhibit in our main gallery is a selection of works by the revered African American artist from Baltimore Joyce Scott that were created at Pyramid Atlantic in 2000 during a collaborative residency. The nature of Ms. Scott’s work is socio-political and her series of prints deals with the worlds of children, women and the impact of war on the lives of these members of society. Ms. Scott says, “When a woman is raped, killed or maimed, the entire system collapses.” Ms. Scott works deftly straddles the worlds of art and social commentary.

All of the works will be on exhibit from February 10th to April 18th. An opening reception and gallery talk for both show will occur on Saturday, February 14th from 6 pm to 8 pm. The exhibit will be held at 8230 Georgia Avenue. For more information email jdominguez@pyramid-atlantic.org
